The Social Contract Between Government And People Is Unraveling

Unlike the theory of social evolutionism, which views the evolution of society and human history as progressing in some new, unique direction(s), sociological cycle theory argues that events and stages of society and history are generally repeating themselves in cycles. (source)

It has all happened before. Many times. It is all happening again.

Is the recurring cycle one between authoritarian/collectivist and individualist/liberty cultures? "...choice is all about individualism... Collectivism, under whatever name you want to call it abolishes choice." (see here)

"Broadly defined, individualism emphasizes personal freedom and achievement. Individualist culture therefore awards social status to personal accomplishments such as important discoveries, innovations, great artistic or humanitarian achievements and all actions that make an individual stand out. Collectivism, in contrast emphasizes embeddedness of individuals in a larger group. It encourages conformity and discourages individuals from dissenting and standing out. Platteau (2000) for example illustrates collective culture in the context of African development. Specifically, he documents that productive individuals are seen with suspicion and are coaxed into sharing their surplus with the community. Collective punishments exist to penalize the rich.

...Generalized morality means that individuals support a set of social norms that are valid for all citizens in a given society, without excluding any particular group of people. Generalized morality is based implicitly on the notion that all humans have equal rights and duties and share a set of universal values. Limited morality in contrast views given norms of morality valid only within a given group such as the extended family, the clan or the tribe. When interacting with people outside one’s extended family, these social norms do not apply and opportunistic and amoral behavior is considered morally acceptable and justified."(source)

Identity politics has people identify with a group - a 'collective'. Their loyalty attaches to their group and can treat people not so identified differently, adversarially - even immorally. History is filled with examples. Often divisions form between the 'rich' and the 'poor'; management and labor; capitalists and socialists; 'makers' and 'takers'; etc. See: Cloward–Piven strategy for more. Self-reliance and individualism made America great in the first place. By going back to the foundation of personal responsibility, we can quickly rebuild the trust we have in our peers. ...When we see on a personal level that someone is competent, self-motivated, and productive, we can build trusted partnerships. Voluntary partnerships. Partnerships where we are not enslaved to the other party, where we are free to take our business elsewhere if they do something to lose our trust. (source)

I think it is utopian nonsense to think that, if we change the system, we’ll be freed of the problems that come from our own human nature in all of our enterprises under any system.

The 'Broken Window Theory' is fact. Rewarding corrupt actions only encourages further corruption.

According to the Second Law of Thermodynamics: a system progresses in the direction of increasing disorder, or entropy, of the system. The status quo is degrading and under stress. A 'New Normal" seems to be forming. Politics As Usual may well become Unusual and even dangerous.

If political consensus can not be regained conflict may result. Social stresses often lead to increased authoritarian government action. How will the status quo collapse? ... The most competent will realise the impossibility of keeping it glued together and so they will exit first. The most noble will try to keep it going but they will burn out and drop away, leaving the incompetent to oversee the final collapse. (source)

Caring can't be legislated. Nor will taking from some to give to others incentivise economic growth and wealth creation.

If Politics As Usual cycles between voluntary cooperation and coercive exploitation will the trend continue toward an oppressive Great Reset? … or will liberty again become politically relevant once there is little left to plunder?
