An UnGovernable UnCommon Interest (Part2)

Some critics incorrectly confuse libertarians with ‘anarchists’. But don't forget: Government is authoritarian by nature - Big Governments more so than small ones. Unwanted government decrees are resisted by its victims. Resistance can even lead to revolution. So, ironically, popular resistance to government rules can lead to un-governable anarchy. Isn't this what caused the War for Independence from British rule? Social order requires a shared ‘social contract’. It requires voluntary compliance based on similar interests not blind obedience to someone else's interests.

We, the People' didn't expect a declining standard of living. Still, decline is evident all around us. Our social, economic and political edifice is cracking.

Social and political stresses become ever more evident. The election of President Trump (a Politically Incorrect anti-politician) is a very clear example of how people feel about the status quo. Candidate Trump was rejected by establishment Democrats AND Republicans. How often does that happen?

Bernie Sanders wanted to pull the Democrats further to the Left than the Establishment wanted and was also rejected by that party.

We the People are dividing. The 2016 election results are being rejected by many people on The Left and subverted by government employees. Indeed, anarchy is already with us.

Opposition is mounting. The 'Tea Party' challenged the establishment Republican Party while 'Progressives' now increasingly challenge Tea Party values as well as the Democratic Party establishment. See here and here for some examples.

'The Collapse of Complex Societies' (1988), examines the collapse of civilizations in terms of network theory, energy economics and complexity theory. Tainter argues that sustainability or collapse of societies follow from the success or failure of problem-solving institutions and that societies collapse when their investments in social complexity and their "energy subsidies" reach a point of diminishing marginal returns. He recognizes collapse when a society involuntarily sheds a significant portion of its complexity.

Let's start by distinguishing force and power...real power attracts cooperation; it has little need for force. When a government can't depend on allegiance and voluntary compliance it must force people to obey. This expands organizational complexity and adds administrative costs. Resentment and resistance to force also grows. See here.

Competition between and among political interests over distribution of limited resources forms and accelerates. 'Solidarity' turns to conflict and adversarial behavior. The 'culture war' becomes more acrimonious. (See here)

"This is a new equilibrium in the American political metagame. This is the breaking of mediative and cooperation-possible political institutions and practices, and their replacement by non-mediative and cooperation-impossible political institutions and practices. This is what it looks like, in a modern Western context, when things fall apart." (See here)

Moody’s is a major ratings agency, which performs financial research and analysis on governments and commercial entities and ranks the credit-worthiness of borrowers. On March 15, Moody’s warned that the US, the UK, Germany, France, and Spain “are all at risk of soaring debt costs and will have to implement austerity plans that threaten ‘social cohesion’.” Further, Moody’s warned that such ‘austerity’ measures increase the potential for ‘social unrest’:

Extremes beget extremes. Extremes of financialization lead to extremes of wealth which lead to extremes of class disparity which lead to extremes of political polarization which lead to destabilization and collapse. (See here)

When institutions have lost public trust and thus their legitimacy, the solution is fragmentation and decentralization. (See here) Secessionist movements can even spring up as conflicting interests widen and social cooperation degrades. (See here)

Civil unrest is nothing new in America. Imagine what could happen when serious economic stress such as a severe new recession enters the political theater. Some expect worse: "A depression is in our future, no matter what actions are taken at this point. Keep calm and prepare yourself." (See here)

Anarchy is the absence of law. You might say domestic terrorists are innovating new rules of social conduct for people to buy. They are political capitalists trading in the currency of allegiance and capturing market share of social acceptance.

Restore the Social Contract. Redraw boundaries to match laws with political values. This will reduce resentment, resistance and un-governability. It will avoid divergence and prevent anarchy.

"I see the liberty of the individual ... as the necessary condition for the flowering of all the other goods that mankind cherishes: moral virtue, civilization, the arts and sciences, economic prosperity. Out of liberty, then, stem the glories of civilized life.” Murray Rothbard
