Politics As Usual

|
Political reality in the United States of America is that states are now again no longer united. Disunity exists both among and within states. Nothing is permanent. As happens with marriage between individuals, differences between political units can become irreconcilable and divorce becomes a better option than conflict. Separation becomes less costly than civil war. History is full of examples including our Civil War; Formosa separated from China; the USSR broke up into separate countries; England left the EU (Brexit), to name a few. Does our Constitution need a ‘Separation Amendment’? A state may leave the Union by request of its legislature and consent of a majority of the House and Senate. A state may be removed from the Union by 2/3 vote of the House and the Senate. Or why not offer a choice? Selection Amendment: There shall be several different options available for states to join in union. How about a Red Constitution and a Blue Constitution? Perhaps even offer a Gold Constitution which is the original Constitution. Related: Slouching Towards Fort Sumter? True or False? ... at this stage it’s far too late for a national divorce.

"I see the liberty of the individual ... as the necessary condition for the flowering of all the other goods that mankind cherishes: moral virtue, civilization, the arts and sciences, economic prosperity. Out of liberty, then, stem the glories of civilized life.” Murray Rothbard |
