Ex-guard sentenced for abusing girl

ELIZABETHTOWN - A former corrections officer was sentenced Tuesday to seven to 14 years in prison on charges he sexually abused a young girl over a two-year period.

An Essex County jury had convicted Ronnie Barber, of Keeseville, 130 miles north of Albany, on two counts of sexual abuse and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. The Clinton Correctional Facility officer was accused of having sex with a girl starting at age 8 from February 1996 to summer 1998.

A prison spokesman said Barber automatically lost his job when he was convicted in May. He had been suspended since his indictment in September.

Barber maintained his innocence Tuesday, saying he'd turned down a plea agreement to a reduced charge with no prison time, according to the Press-Republican of Plattsburgh.

Judge Andrew Halloran sentenced Barber to the maximum on the abuse charges, saying Barber had a fair trial.
